How Long Is a BLS Certification Good For? (AHA Rules)

If you hold a BLS (Basic Life Support) card, the most common question is simple: how long is it good for? The short answer is two years — but there are a few details worth knowing so your certification never lapses at the wrong moment.

AHA BLS cards are valid for 2 years

Every American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider eCard is valid for two years from the date you complete the course. Your expiration date is printed right on the eCard. The same two-year window applies to ACLS and PALS Provider cards as well.

When should you renew?

Don't wait until the day it expires. Most hospitals, nursing programs, and staffing agencies want to see a current card, and some require renewal a month or two ahead of the expiration date. A good rule of thumb: renew within the last 60–90 days before your card expires.

If your card has already expired, that's usually not a problem — you can still get re-certified. You simply complete the certification again rather than a shortened renewal path.
