This course meets the Florida Board Of Nursing requirements for LPN’s and is designed to provide basic knowledge of IV therapy practice. All interested healthcare providers are allowed enrollment but must stay within their scope of practice according to Florida law.
This 30 hour IV certification is achieved via 26 hours of at home online contact hours to meet the online portion of the Florida LPN IV certification requirement and 4 hours of hands-on skills training. Participants will receive hands-on practice with our IV simulation manikins among other options... Topics include: infection control, central line use, fluids, electrolytes, blood, plasma, albumin, TPN therapy, assessment and care. Medication math formulas and dosage calculations are also discussed. The hands-on skill training is conducted with an instructor.

Course Objectives
- Discuss the LPN’s role in IV therapy, IV infusions, and managing central lines as identified in the Florida Nurse Practice Act (NPA) and your facility or agency’s policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) in IV therapy as defined by Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Understand LPNs in the state of Florida provide IV therapy under the direct supervision of a RN licensed in Florida.
- Explain the legal aspects of IV therapy by LPNs including the policies and procedures of the institution.
- Recognize medical terminology pertinent to IV therapy and documentation.
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of peripheral veins LPNs may access for venipuncture.
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of central venous access “medical specialist” may access for IV therapy.
- Perform a venipuncture utilizing the principles of infection control in IV therapy.
- Identify the role of the LPN to monitor, maintain, and report adverse effects of IV site and infusion.
- Identify signs and symptoms of IV therapy complications including specific interventions.
- List indications for a peripheral and central venous heparin lock.
- Calculate IV fluids rates of administration.
- Discuss the difference in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN).
- Describe the role of the LPN in the administration of IV medications.
- Describe the role of the LPN to care for a client receiving chemotherapy.
- Verbalize information about blood transfusions including indications, types of reactions, complications and the role of the LPN to care for clients receiving blood and blood products.
